GDP - South Africa
Expenditure Approach (switch to Production)Explore detailed breakdowns of GDP by expenditure by different economic sectors, as well as by source (e.g., Household spend, Government spend and Investment), and discover the impact of international trade (i.e., exports vs imports). More info.
South Africa's GDP has struggled since the 2008 financial crisis, with real GDP growth declining consistently from its post-Apartheid height of 5.6% in 2006 and 2007. Between 1993 and 2007, South Africa grew at an average (compounded) annual growth of 3.7%, which dropped to 1.5% between 2007 and 2019, the year before the Covid lockdowns. In the four years since 2019, average annual growth has been 0.3%.
In 2023, South Africa's production was largely consumed (86.8% of GDP) as opposed to reinvested (15.4% of GDP). Consumption was split between direct household spend (67%) and Government spend for households (19.8%). The latter includes items like public health and education. Since 1993, investments have grown ahead of consumption, though given the low starting base, investment's share of GDP has yet to rise above the global average, which is over 25% of GDP.
In monetary terms, South Africa enjoyed a trade surplus in the 11 years to 2003, averaging 2% of nominal GDP. But in 2004, the trade position turned negative, and averaged -1% of nominal GDP between 2004 and 2015. South Africa once again secured a trade surpluss in 2016, which has averaged 2% of GDP in the 8 years to 2023. As you can see, since 2016 South Africa's net exports were negative in real terms (e.g. number of goods), but it is able to charge more for the goods and services it does export and/or pay less for those it imports. Its recent trade surpluss is thus likely driven by higher commodity prices in recent years and/or cheaper imports.
